There is a familiar saying: “Anything worth doing is worth doing well.” But, is that really true? I suggest the answer is no.
When we think we have to do everything perfectly, or as near to perfectly as we are able, it can cause us problems. Many times we end up planning and gearing up to do something perfectly, only to realize we can’t do it perfectly, which leads to overwhelm and giving up. Sometimes we don’t even try to do things because we know we won’t be able to do them well. It all just sounds exhausting.
The truth is, anything that’s worth doing, is simply worth doing. I’m not suggesting we put in no effort at all, but B- work will do in almost every situation. For example, if I have a goal to write a blog post every day for 30 days, and I think I have to make every blog post amazing and inspiring, I probably would fall flat on my face and not write a blog post every day because it would take too long to figure out what to write and exactly how to write it so that it is amazing and inspiring. I might not even be confident enough to write any blog posts if my standard is that high. However, if I let myself off the perfectionist hook and decide that writing B- blog posts is okay, and much better than sitting in overwhelm and not doing anything because I’m trying to write perfect blog posts.
This is the case with all of our goals. Better to move forward with B- work than to be frozen in overwhelm and self-doubt. It’s amazing what we can accomplish when we allow ourselves to be human and make mistakes, and not be perfect. It’s amazing how much better we feel when we are loving and kind enough to accept less than perfection from ourselves.
